The physical geography of Europe

1-Mountains and plains.
There are three main zones:
            ▪ The Great European Plain: It stretches from the west  to the east of the continent.
            ▪ Old mountains: They are in the north and in the centre. These include  the Pyrenees and the Scandinavian Mountains.
            ▪ Young mountains: They are in the south. These include the Alps, the Apennines, the Carpathians, the Balkan Mountains and the Caucasus Mountains.

2-European rivers

  • Rivers that flow into the Arctic Ocean. In winter they are usually frozen. These include the Pechora and the Northern Dvina.
  • Rivers that flow into the Atlantic Ocean.  Examples are the Seine, the Duero, the Guadiana and the Thames.
  • Rivers that flow into the Mediterranean Sea. These include the Ebro, Po and Rhône.
  • Rivers that flow into the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. For example the Volga and the Danube.

3-Lakes

There are many lakes in Central Europe and most of them are medium-sized. Among them, are Lake Geneva and Lake Constance.
