The physical geography of Europe
1-Mountains and plains.
There are three main zones:
▪ The Great European Plain: It stretches from the west to the east of the continent.
▪ Old mountains: They are in the north and in the centre. These include the Pyrenees and the Scandinavian Mountains.
▪ Young mountains: They are in the south. These include the Alps, the Apennines, the Carpathians, the Balkan Mountains and the Caucasus Mountains.
2-European rivers
- Rivers that flow into the Arctic Ocean. In winter they are usually frozen. These include the Pechora and the Northern Dvina.
- Rivers that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Examples are the Seine, the Duero, the Guadiana and the Thames.
- Rivers that flow into the Mediterranean Sea. These include the Ebro, Po and Rhône.
- Rivers that flow into the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. For example the Volga and the Danube.
3-Lakes
There are many lakes in Central Europe and most of them are medium-sized. Among them, are Lake Geneva and Lake Constance.
